The Huchen Project – Rescuing a Living Fossil of the Carpathians

The Huchen (Hucho hucho), also known as the Danube Salmon, is a true "living fossil" of the Carpathian region and the ultimate biological indicator of the health of our mountain rivers. Today, due to habitat fragmentation and severe anthropogenic pressure, this emblematic species stands on the brink of extinction in Romania. The AQUATERRA Ecological Society is launching an integrated, long-term national program designed to identify and conserve the pure genetic lineages of the species, ensuring its survival through advanced managed breeding techniques and controlled restocking.

🎯 Ecological Urgency in the Carpathians

Wild populations of Huchen in the river basins where the species historically reigned supreme (Mureș, Bistrița, Vișeu, and Tisa) have suffered a severe range contraction. Without a clear genetic database and swift expert intervention, the species risks disappearing completely from our waters due to inbreeding and ecological degradation.

🧬 The Solution: Ex-Situ Conservation

The only real chance of rescue lies in the responsible collection of legitimate wild broodstock, maintaining a viable genetic core, and the scientifically guided restocking of secured river sections.

⚖️ Strategic and Legal Alignment

The program directly transposes the community-interest objectives of the European Union's Habitats Directive and aligns with the priorities of the National Action Plan for biodiversity conservation.

🏢 Centralized Coordination

All activities, resources, and strategic partnerships are managed centrally by the AQUATERRA Ecological Society (Bucharest), an association founded in 1993, guaranteeing full administrative and financial traceability.

🌲 Plutonița Infrastructure

Practical ex-situ conservation and research activities take place at the Plutonița Research Station (Frasin, Suceava County). This facility is secured through a long-term bailment contract (contract de comodat), providing the project with a stable and predictable platform.

RAS Technology and Genetic Heritage Conservation [04-RAS]

Know-how Status: 🟢 100% Finalized | Infrastructure: 🟡 Ready for technological integration

To save the Huchen, we must provide it with an environment safer than its degraded natural habitats. We have finalized the scientific protocols for controlled fertilization and for overcoming the critical life stages of the first years. The physical spaces at Plutonița are ready. The next vital step is equipping them with Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), which will transform the station into a true "living gene bank" for the protection and multiplication of this unique species.

How we protect the fry from their first minutes of life... ➔

🐟 Why is RAS technology crucial?

In mountain rivers, a single flash flood, accidental pollution, or sudden temperature variations can wipe out an entire generation of Huchen. Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) act as an ecological shield: they automatically control temperature, oxygenation, and water purity, eliminating risk factors from the natural environment.

💻 The Station's Digital Heart

The aquaculture facility will be equipped with real-time monitoring sensors, high-performance biological filters, and advanced UV-C and ozone sterilization systems, which eliminate pathogens without using harsh chemicals.

💎 An Investment in the Species' Future

We are not just purchasing tanks or pumps; we are building an artificial ecosystem that guarantees the survival of thousands of larvae. Every allocated resource directly increases the hatching rate and success in the first months of life—the most vulnerable phase in the Huchen's biological cycle.

📊 Digital Transparency

The implemented technology will allow us to digitalize growth and evolutionary data. Project partners and sponsors will be able to track water quality parameters and the development dynamics of the Huchen batches they support online.

💰 Financial Breakdown of Objective [04-RAS]

Investment Pillar Allocated Budget
The Station's Core (Incubation & Early Development Systems) 380,398.60 EUR
The Circulating System (RAS Recirculation Infrastructure & Automation) 360,273.69 EUR
TOTAL OBJECTIVE BUDGET [04-RAS] 740,672.29 EUR

Objective [05-HRV] – The Survival Pillar: The Live Feed Station

Vital Stage: 🟢 Know-how 100% Finalized | Infrastructure: 🟡 Ready for setup

In the natural environment, the survival rate of Huchen fry is below 5% due to predators and difficulties in finding food. At our station, we transform this rate through "Socratic nurturing": the fry receive microscopic live feed grown under totally sterile conditions. It is the cornerstone without which restocking success cannot be guaranteed.

Why live feed is the secret to success... ➔

🧬 The Biological (Socratic) Challenge

Huchen juveniles have an extremely intense metabolism—they can double their weight within 24 hours, feeding up to 30 times a day. If we offer commercial feed (dry pellets) during this phase, the fry lose their natural predatory instincts and become highly vulnerable. The live feed we cultivate serves as the fishes' "survival school."

🔬 What are we building at Plutonița?

The technical plan involves setting up 7–8 special micro-enclosures, with ventilation and temperatures controlled independently for each culture: from protozoans (0.1 mm paramecia) to rotifers, microworms, and insect cultures. It is a living laboratory where biology meets technology to sustain life.

💎 An Investment with Direct Traceability

We are not building an abstract concept, but a physical infrastructure (bioreactors, filtration, and monitoring systems) that directly drives the restocking success rate. Partners supporting this objective are directly financing the life we restore to our rivers.

💰 Financial Breakdown of Objective [05-HRV]

Investment Pillar Allocated Budget
Laboratory Infrastructure & Starter Cultures (HDPE vessels, micro-heaters, peristaltic pumps) 84,921.60 EUR
Distribution & Automated Control Systems (Special timers and feeders) 35,658.90 EUR
TOTAL OBJECTIVE BUDGET [05-HRV] 120,580.50 EUR

Objectives [01-TOX] & [06-LAB] – Securing the Home: Laboratory Analyses and Ecotoxicology

Technical Status: 🟢 Basic portable parameters covered | 🟡 Fixed laboratory currently being fitted out

Saving a species cannot stop at the walls of a hatchery. For the fry raised at Plutonița to survive after release, we must also secure and biologically cleanse the river into which they return. In the field, to detect invisible threats in the water, we require rapid field kits alongside a high-performance stationary laboratory.

What invisible enemies we look for and the required funds... ➔

🧪 Why are complex chemical analyses needed?

Our mountain rivers may seem crystal clear at first glance, but they can hide emerging pollutants that are extremely dangerous for young fry: microplastics from waste degradation, antibiotic residues, and heavy metals accumulated in sediments. Without toxicological and histological analyses performed in a dedicated facility, we risk releasing fish into invisibly contaminated areas, compromising the entire breeding effort.

🏢 What equipment are we bringing to the laboratory building?

Completing this objective will transform our building (currently at the structural shell stage) into a true center for ichthyological diagnostics, microbiology, and ecotoxicology. Here, we will process sets of biological samples to monitor parasites, fungi (such as Saprolegnia), and viral diseases.

🧬 Genetic Stock Refreshment (Code 03-IMP)

Through this logistical pillar, we also manage secured cross-border channels to bring in the first batches of external genetic material from elite Danube basins (Austria and Serbia)—the only way to break the inbreeding trap affecting our isolated populations.

💰 Financial Breakdown of the Laboratory Objective

Investment Pillar Allocated Budget
Diagnostic, Microbiology, and Parasitology Equipment (Veterinary imaging systems, sterilization autoclaves, professional microscopes) 74,041.68 EUR
Multiparameter Analyzers, Spectrophotometers, and Respirometers (Fixed water quality equipment, swim tunnel respirometer for stamina testing) 80,590.32 EUR
TOTAL BUDGET ASSOCIATED WITH CODE [01-TOX] & [06-LAB] 154,632.00 EUR

Objective [08-DIG] – Advanced Monitoring Technologies (Drones, PIT Tagging & Video)

Technical Status: 🟢 Equipment identified | 🟡 Deployment protocols being implemented

Without strict digital monitoring after release into the wild, our years of effort would remain unseen. How do we know if the fry raised at the station have adapted, survived, or found the necessary food? We use cutting-edge technology to "read" the story of the Huchen directly from the heart of the river.

How we "listen" to the river with technology... ➔

🛸 Why technology is our guardian

Mountain rivers are vast and difficult to patrol physically. By using professional drones equipped with LiDAR sensors and multispectral cameras, we can rapidly map habitats and detect illegal human activity (poaching or pollution) early on, before it leads to irreversible catastrophes.

🐟 How the fish "talk" to us

Through PIT (Passive Integrated Transponder) tags, each released specimen receives a unique digital identity. Receivers and telemetry stations strategically positioned along the river stream data to us in real time regarding their dispersion, migration success, and environmental adaptation, all without disrupting wildlife.

👁️ The Underwater Eye

Fixed video monitoring systems and underwater drones provide us with a unique opportunity to observe feeding behavior and wilderness interactions, gathering invaluable biological data for the international scientific community.

📈 The Tech-CSR Argument (High-Impact Visibility)

This component is the digital "jewel" of the program. By financing this pillar, our partners receive spectacular video content and live data feeds that transform a classical ecological investment into undeniable proof of Tech for Good, generating massive PR and reputational capital.

💰 Financial Breakdown of Objective [08-DIG]

Logistical Component Allocated Budget
Aerial Mapping & Underwater Monitoring (DJI Matrice drone systems, LiDAR, multispectral cameras, and underwater drones) 61,020.44 EUR
PIT Tagging Systems & Telemetry Stations (Control units, microchips, automated fry counting systems) 61,626.80 EUR
Sensors & Fixed Stations for Physio-Chemical Parameters (Environmental data reception hardware) 28,601.10 EUR
TOTAL OBJECTIVE BUDGET [08-DIG] 151,248.34 EUR

Long-Term Partnership: Unlocking European Funding Mechanisms Together

Strategic Horizon: 🏢 The Business Pillar – Corporate Patronage, Co-Financing, and Horizon Europe

Unlike fragmented, short-term ecological initiatives, the National Action Plan for Rescuing the Huchen is a strategic endeavor built upon a 10-year horizon. This continuity is not only an absolute biological necessity for stabilizing the species, but also the strategic key that allows us to access major co-financing pipelines from Brussels (such as complex Natura LIFE programs), whose total European budget exceeds 20 million euros.

How we unlock European budgets together... ➔

🇬🇧 The Golden Rule of European Co-Financing

Large-scale programs funded by the European Commission require solid private commitment from consortiums, translated into a fixed co-financing rate of 15–25%. Your corporate involvement does not merely cover a local "quota"; it acts as a genuine capital multiplier, directly unlocking the association's access to these macro European funds.

📊 Integrated Sustainability Platform (ESG)

A long-term partnership guarantees an elite positioning for your brand within international environmental consortia. Companies do not just provide emergency donations; they become co-authors of a stable, fully traceable ecological platform perfectly aligned with strict non-financial reporting criteria (Environmental, Social, Governance - ESG).

🎯 Operational Efficiency and Rigorous Auditing

A project of this scale relies exclusively on managerial excellence. Every private funding line is directed squarely toward high-end research equipment and physical infrastructure. Biological and financial results undergo periodic auditing processes, reported with surgical transparency.
