The AQUATERRA Ecological Society bases its entire research, conservation, and ecological management activity on the scientific legacy left by Academician Petre M. Bănărescu, the greatest Romanian ichthyologist and zoogeographer, internationally recognized as an absolute authority on freshwater fish.

This page stands as a tribute not only to a world-class scientist but also to a man who lived through decades of harsh political trials with dignity, leaving behind unshakable moral landmarks.

👤 The Man: A Destiny Under the Lens of History

Born in Craiova in 1921, Petre Bănărescu pursued an exceptional academic path, earning his PhD in 1949 and the title of Doctor Docent in 1962. However, his refusal to align ideologically with totalitarianism meant his life was marked by turbulent periods, documented today in the CNSAS (National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives) archives:

  • Years of Detention and Re-education: In May 1950, while serving as a university assistant in Cluj, he was arrested and sent for a year to the forced labor camps at the Danube–Black Sea Canal (Capul Midia), accused of hostile manifestations against the communist regime.
  • Persecution and Marginalization: Following his release in 1951, he was deprived of academic employment for two years, being forced to work as a timekeeper in Timișoara to support his family.
  • Constant Informational Surveillance: Over the years, he was tracked step by step by the Securitate under various code names, such as "The Naturalist" (1961) or "Bănică" (1975).
  • Regime Pressures: His files reflect a tragic reality of that era. In order to continue his research, he was registered as an informant under the name "Pescarul Ion" (Ion the Fisherman), yet the Securitate records explicitly noted that he failed to provide any materials of real operational significance against others.

Despite these immense pressures, Petre Bănărescu remained a deeply free spirit. "The country was within him," regardless of the abuses of the historical context.

The "Zoogeography of Fresh Waters" Treatise

  • Systematics on a Global Scale: He described dozens of new fish taxa from Romania and vast regions of Asia (China, Korea, Vietnam).
  • Fundamental Works: His 1964 monograph remains a cornerstone reference work based on the study of thousands of collected specimens.
  • Authority in Zoogeography: His treatise, "Zoogeography of Fresh Waters", published in Germany, is considered essential reading in major universities worldwide.

Japanese Imperial Recognition (1997): Globally renowned, the professor had a private scientific meeting in Romania during the 1980s with Emperor Akihito of Japan (an ichthyologist himself). Later, in 1997, the Japanese Sovereign officially extended to him, through a Romanian presidential delegation arriving in Tokyo, a high imperial recognition and a unique dynastic album for his exceptional contribution to the study of Asian ichthyofauna.

🧭 The AQUATERRA Vision and Monozukuri Philosophy

The field work that AQUATERRA conducts today – including the monitoring of the Vâlsan River and the rescue of the huchen (Hucho hucho) – is the direct continuation of the early warnings sounded by the Professor. In our laboratories, a deep respect for precision and the Japanese concept of Monozukuri (the art of making things with perfection) prevails.

"That photo shows the students of that time (1995) at Comana, engaged in scientific fishing, where we were assisting Acad. Petru Bănărescu on the banks of the Gurbanul stream. It was there that we discovered and described a species new to science: the Comana chub (Petroleuciscus celensis), a species described by myself, Acad. Petru Bănărescu, and Dr. Teodor Nalbant — the greatest ichthyologists of Romania."
